THE FOLLOWING MORNING LACEY WENT to The Pulse building. She wasn’t supposed to go there but she needed to see Gretchen. It was still just seven in the morning and the place was deserted. She made sure no one who would recognize her was around before entering the lobby. Luckily Henry was at the front desk.
“Lacey, I was starting to think you’d changed jobs without saying goodbye.”
“I’d never do that to you, Henry. I’m on an assignment.”
Henry gave her a broad, warm smile. His teeth were white as pearls.
“What time are you on duty till?” she said.
“I knock off at seven thirty.”
“That’s good to know.”
“What’s going on sweetheart? You seem nervous.”
“It’s just the assignment I’m on. I’m not supposed to come by here till it’s over.”
Henry nodded. He knew reporters sometimes went undercover, or else got in trouble because of something they published and had to lay low for a while.
“You want to come in back?” he said.
He had a small security office behind the lobby. There were a few screens in there and a one-way glass window overlooking the lobby.
“Yes,” she said. “That would be great.”
“You looking to speak to Sandra Price? If you are you’re out of luck. She’s in DC for those senate hearings.”
“I’m looking for Gretchen.”
“Okay,” Henry said. “Far as I know, she’s in town.”
“Thank God,” Lacey said.
Henry could hear the relief in her voice.
“You poor thing,” he said and brought her back into the security office.
There was a box of donuts on the desk.
“Go ahead,” he said. He poured her some hot coffee from a carafe and put a donut on a paper plate. “You look like you could use some breakfast.”
“Thank you, Henry,” she said.
She found the older man’s presence comforting. She’d never known her father and she found it intensely consoling whenever a man his age paid her any attention. Henry had grown up in the south when it was a very different place. He came to New York when he was twenty and still swore he’d never go back. Lacey wasn’t sure if he thought they still treated blacks down there they way they used to. She suspected that his reasons were more personal than that. It reminded her that everyone had their issues in the world. She wasn’t the only one with a past that haunted her.
She broke her donut in half and dipped it in the coffee.
“My son used to eat them that way,” Henry said.
Lacey smiled at him.
“Will I be able to wait back here after you clock off?” she said.
“You will if I wait with you,” he said.
“I can’t ask you to do that.”
“Of course you can, child. You look like you need a little help this morning and I’m proud to be the one to give it to you.”
Lacey put her hand on Henry’s. It was an intimate gesture but she felt so grateful to him for helping her. She’d always felt that he looked out for her.
The morning security detail came in and relieved Henry at seven thirty.
